Dressing For A Portrait

What to wear? Well, that depends. What do you want? Are you looking for a more formal, posed portrait? Are you looking for something fun & playful? Do you want contemporary black & whites? Where are you planning on displaying your portraits? What is the decor like in your home? What are the colors in the rooms you’ll be displaying these portraits? We can discuss this during our initial phone consult and more during our in person consult. When in doubt, bring a few different outfits. Here are some basic guidelines to start with:

DO- Coordinate colors between family members. You don’t need to be matchy-matchy, but your colors and styles should compliment one another and go with the room you want to display your portraits in.

Do- Choose coordinate right down to your socks and shoes. No white socks sticking out glaringly beneath dark pants. No tennis shoes with a more dressy outfit. In fact, think about bare feet for your portraits rather than shoes- these make some of the best portraits!

DO- Accesorize- but don’t overdo it (this is about you, not your jewelry)!

DON’T- Choose busy patterns such as fine stripes or busy dots. In general, steer clear of logos on shirts (unless that’s the aim, such a BSU attire)- they detract from your family and the portrait.

DON’T- Overdo your makeup- Just do pretty much what you normally do. It’s okay to doll it up a tad more than usual, but we don’t want the caked-on look either.

DON’T- Forget to iron your clothes if necessary! Wrinkles stick out like a sore thumb!
